Superduplex stress corrosion cracking

The sudden cracking under the simultaneous action of tensile stresses and corrosive chloride ions, against which superduplex steels exhibit high resistance due to their phase combination.

Superduplex steel is prone to stress corrosion cracking when tensile stresses and chlorides come together. Cracks usually form where the weld was not executed cleanly or too much heat was applied – then the structure tips out of balance between ferrite and austenite.
