Superduplex Steel Phase Ratio
The quantitative balance of austenite and ferrite in the microstructure of super duplex alloys, ideally adjusted to 50:50 through thermal management. This ratio ensures both the required mechanical strength and high corrosion resistance in aggressive media.
Super duplex has a structure of roughly equal parts austenite and ferrite – this gives the material its high strength and corrosion resistance. When welding, you have to be careful not to mess up this ratio. If the heat input is too high or the cooling too slow, the structure flips and you get brittle phases or precipitates that promote cracking and pitting.
