Superduplex Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number

A calculated numerical index quantifying the pitting corrosion resistance of highly alloyed duplex steels based on their chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content. It serves for comparative material assessment in chloride-bearing environments.

The SWE value indicates how well a duplex steel is protected against chloride corrosion. It depends on the content of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. If it is too low, the structure becomes susceptible to pitting and cracking. If it is too high, the material becomes harder and loses toughness. When welding, you must ensure that the filler material matches the base material and that the heat input is not too high, otherwise the structure will flip on you.
