Tactile Seam Tracking
Tactile seam tracking is a method where a feeler probe scans the joint ahead of the arc. This eliminates positional deviations and improves weld accuracy.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
A tactile sensor, often a mechanical contact sensor, is moved over the surface to be welded. The sensor measures height differences and sends this data to a controller.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
Without tactile seam tracking, inaccurate positioning can lead to uneven stresses, which can cause cracks or distortion of the weld. Tracking ensures the arc layer is always uniform and enables a homogeneous joint.
Workshop practice & instructions
Make sure the sensor is properly calibrated and sensitivity is set to detect small height differences. The speed of the sensor should be such that it covers the entire area without moving too fast, which could lead to inaccurate measurements. If tracking issues arise, check sensor position and calibration.
