Tandem Gas Metal Arc Welding
Tandem GMAW welding uses two independent wire electrodes to double the deposition rate and boost productivity.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
Tandem GMAW welding uses two separate wire electrodes, each working independently. Each electrode performs its own welding process, leading to increased overall speed and performance.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
Using two wire electrodes can result in a more uniform welding process, as thermal conductivity is improved. However, the risk of porosity also increases, and process stability depends on the accuracy of electrode positioning.
Workshop practice & instructions
To carry out tandem GMAW welding successfully, the electrodes must be precisely aligned and operated simultaneously. The voltage and currents for each electrode should be unequal (typically 1:2) to achieve optimal melting performance. Precise process control is essential to avoid porosity and other defects.
