Tangential field strength
The component of the magnetic field strength parallel to the surface of the test part. It is the decisive parameter for the formation of leakage fields at near-surface defects.
The tangential field strength is the component of the magnetic field that runs parallel to the surface. It determines how strongly a leakage field builds up at a defect. If you set it too high, the test will also trigger on harmless surface structures, giving you false indications. Too low, and you'll miss deeper cracks. You mainly control it via the distance and orientation of the magnet to the workpiece, and you must document the value cleanly for the test.
