Bending test
The technical bend test checks the formability and bending strength of materials by applying a load to a specimen. It shows the resistance to cracking and deformation on the surface.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
The guided bend test applies a load to a material specimen placed in a specific fixture (e.g., three-point or four-point loading). The specimen is slowly deformed until it finally fractures. This process shows how formable and resistant the material is under mechanical stress.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
The bend strength of a material affects its usability in various technical fields. A material that is too soft or too flexible can suddenly fracture under high loads, leading to safety issues. The guided bend test therefore helps ensure the proper hardness and strength for specific applications.
Shop practice & instructions
To perform the guided bend test, clamp a material specimen in a special machine. The load is slowly increased until the specimen fractures. The maximum load the specimen withstands indicates how strong the material is. This value is often reported as bend strength and is an important parameter for selecting suitable materials in welding and fabrication.
