Technological folding test

The technological folding test checks the formability of sheets and weld specimens by bending to a specified angle. It provides information on the quality of the weld metal and heat-affected zones.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The technological fold test involves bending a sheet or weld specimen to a certain angle (often 90°). This process checks the mechanical formability and stress states within the material.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

The fold test shows whether the material in the weld zone has excessive stress or remains ductile. Too much stress can lead to cracks and deformation. A lack of ductility indicates excessive hardness or insufficient toughness.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

For the technological fold test, bend a sheet or weld specimen to 90° using a protractor. The specimen should bend without cracks or excessive deformation. If there are issues with ductility, reduce stresses in the weld zone, e.g., by controlled cooling or adjusting the welding process.
