Technological bend test

The technological folding test is a forming test where a weld specimen is folded around a bending mandrel. It checks the freedom from cracks and the deformability of the weld.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The specimen is folded to a specified angle under mechanical load. This requires some elasticity and crack resistance from the material.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A failed fold test indicates cracks or excessive stress in the weld. This can lead to notches, wear, or sudden fractures.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use a bending mandrel with a specified angle (typically 90°). The specimen should be at least 10 mm wide and 25 mm long. Fold it gently without applying too much force. A successful test shows no visible cracks or deformation.
