Temperature Gradient at the Fusion Line

The local temperature drop at the interface between liquid weld metal and solid base metal. Together with the solidification rate, it controls the morphological regrowth of the microstructure.

The temperature gradient at the fusion line determines how fast the weld metal solidifies and what structure forms. If it's too steep, you get stresses and cracks; if it's too flat, the structure becomes coarse and the weld loses toughness. You mainly control this via welding speed and heat input. If you go too fast, the gradient becomes too steep; too slow, it tips the other way. Just adjust your travel speed so that the melt runs out calmly and evenly, then it's usually fine.
