Lamellar tearing
A step-like cracking in the base metal parallel to the rolling surface, caused by high tensile stresses acting through the thickness direction. It mainly affects thick, segregated steel plates in T-joint configurations.
Terraced fracture occurs due to tensile stresses transverse to the plate thickness, which appear in the base material as step-like cracks parallel to the rolling surface. The problem mainly occurs in T-joints when the plate has segregation and the stresses are not properly relieved. When welding such connections, watch for controlled cooling and don't make the weld too stiff, otherwise the plate will crack. Before welding, check the plate quality and, if in doubt, adjust the joint preparation.
