Thermal Fatigue

Thermal fatigue arises from repeated thermal expansion, which causes cyclic strains and can lead to cracking.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

In thermal fatigue, materials are periodically heated and cooled by non-stationary temperature fields. This leads to recurring strains and stresses within the material.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Thermal fatigue can cause cracking and deformation in welding processes, especially at high temperatures and with frequent heat transfer steps. It increases susceptibility to hot cracking and reduces component life.

Workshop practice & instructions

To minimize thermal fatigue, you should:

• Limit the maximum heat input.

• Ensure uniform cooling (e.g., with cooling water).

• Reduce weld time under high stress conditions.
