Thermal Stress State

The mechanical stress distribution within a workpiece caused by uneven heating or cooling. Local gradients lead to hot or cold cracking.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Uneven heating or cooling of a workpiece causes stresses that build up due to different expansion coefficients in different areas. These stresses can trigger mechanical compressive forces.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

A thermal stress state can lead to hot cracking or cold cracking, especially when stresses are too high. This can be caused by uneven thermal conductivity or too fast cooling.

Workshop practice & action instructions

To minimize thermal stresses, ensure even heating and cooling. This can be achieved by choosing the right welding process, controlling the heat source, and using cooling blankets.
