Thermal welding flux
Thermal welding powder is a fused, granulated powder that forms slag and insulates heat during submerged arc welding.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Thermal welding powder consists of metals like titanium or nickel, which are melted at high temperatures. After cooling, it forms fine crystal needles (grains), which during welding are transformed under pressure and heat into the molten weld pool.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
The powder helps form slag, which protects the weld and improves joint quality. It also acts as thermal insulation to stabilize the temperature in the weld pool. However, incorrect selection or amount of powder can lead to insufficient slag formation, causing porosity and reduced mechanical properties of the joint.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use the powder in the manufacturer's specified amounts. Ensure it is properly melted and finely grained. Regularly check the quality of the powder and replace it if you see signs of contamination or changes in texture.
