Thermodynamic phase equilibrium curve
A mathematically defined boundary line in a phase diagram separating coexistence regions of different chemical phases from one another.
The phase diagram shows you where the steel needs to go during cooling to get the right structure. If you cool too fast, the material becomes hard and crack-prone because martensite forms. If you cool too slowly, the grain becomes coarse and the steel loses toughness. So you have to hit the cooling time in the critical range so that the structure transforms cleanly and doesn't tip into extremes.
