Thermomechanical Coupling
Thermomechanical coupling describes the interaction between temperature changes and mechanical stresses during forming or cooling of materials. It can lead to cracks and deformation if not handled correctly.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism
Thermomechanical coupling (TMC) arises from uneven expansion or contraction of materials at different temperatures. This causes stresses when parts move differently or don't expand uniformly.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
During weld formation, TMC can cause cracks and distortion. For example, rapid temperature changes or uneven cooling can lead to stress buildup and thus hot cracks or transformation products like martensite.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To minimize TMC, ensure even cooling of the weld. For high-temperature-strength materials, use special coolants or cooling strategies. Keep the temperature in the critical range as short as possible and avoid rapid temperature changes.
