Titanium alpha-beta microstructure modification
The targeted thermomechanical processing of titanium alloys to produce a combined microstructure featuring both high strength and good elongation at break.
Titanium comes in different microstructural states, mainly as alpha and beta phases. By targeted heat treatment and forming, you can set the mixing ratio of these phases. That makes the material stronger and tougher, but it's tricky: If you put too much heat in when welding or don't control the cooling, you get the wrong structure and the part becomes brittle or cracks. So stick strictly to the specified temperature windows and the time the part must stay in them. Cooling too fast or annealing too long messes up the structure just like too much deformation.
