Titanium Alpha-Beta Microstructure

A combined microstructure of hexagonal alpha and body-centered cubic beta crystallites in titanium alloys, adjusted through targeted alloying elements and heat treatments. It offers an optimal ratio of strength and formability.

Titanium occurs in various microstructural states depending on the alloy and heat treatment. When welding, it's important to keep the cooling under control – too fast cooling gives a hard, brittle structure, too slow can overage the material. Alpha-beta alloys are the classic because they weld well and can be hardened again afterwards. Make sure you have the right shielding gas coverage, otherwise the material will burn and you'll get cracks or porosity. If you control the heat input cleanly and cool the parts in a controlled manner after welding, you'll get a usable structure.
