Titanium Alpha-Beta Microstructural Transformation

Thermally controlled phase transformation between hexagonally close-packed and body-centered cubic structures to adjust specific strength-ductility profiles.

Titanium comes in two microstructures: hexagonal alpha and cubic beta. During welding, the material undergoes this transformation, and the cooling rate determines which microstructure ends up present. Cooling too fast makes the material hard and brittle; cooling too slowly results in a soft, tough structure. You have to control the cooling to get a balanced ratio – not too fast, not too slow. Make sure the heat-affected zone cools evenly, then the structure will be right.
