Titanium Alpha-Beta Forming

Hot working of titanium alloys in the dual-phase temperature interval to establish a balanced combination of strength and fracture toughness. The microstructure exhibits globular alpha grains in a transformed beta matrix.

The alpha-beta transformation is the key step to set a microstructure in titanium alloys that combines good strength with decent toughness. When welding, you must ensure controlled cooling. If you cool the part too fast or get too hot, you'll get a coarse or unstable microstructure that will cause trouble later. Keep heat input low and let the component cool evenly, then the microstructure will be fine.
