Titanium Alpha Case Layer
Titanium alpha-case layer is a brittle, oxygen- and nitrogen-rich surface zone on titanium materials. It must be removed to avoid cracking.
Physico-Chemical Mechanism
The titanium alpha case forms through diffusion of oxygen and nitrogen into the titanium surface during hot forming or heat treatment. This leads to a brittle, hard layer on the surface.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
The presence of titanium alpha case can cause cracking and reduced mechanical properties. It must be removed before welding the workpiece.
Workshop Practice & Procedures
Use a chemical or mechanical polishing process to completely remove the titanium alpha case. The exact method depends on the material and desired surface condition.
