Titanium alpha microstructure stability

The resistance of the hexagonal crystal lattice structure of titanium alloys against unwanted phase transitions and embrittlement during long-term thermal exposure at high temperatures.

Titanium is tricky when welding because it quickly absorbs oxygen and nitrogen from the air at high temperatures. This makes the material hard and brittle, and the weld gets cracks. You must completely shield the melt and the heated zone with shielding gas until the part has cooled down. Also keep the heat input low so the structure stays stable and doesn't become brittle. Cleanliness is key; any contamination will immediately backfire.
