Titanium Alpha Stabilization Mechanism
The thermodynamic elevation of the allotropic transformation temperature by alloying elements such as aluminum, stabilizing the hexagonal close-packed lattice state.
Aluminum is the most important stabilizer for the alpha phase in titanium alloys. It raises the transformation temperature, keeping the structure stable at room temperature and maintaining its strength. Without this addition, the material flips too quickly into the soft beta phase during welding, weakening the weld and potentially causing cracks. When welding, you need to ensure controlled cooling so the desired structure forms again. The exact alloy composition always depends on the manufacturer's data sheet – stick to that, and it'll be fine.
