Titanium-Aluminum Intermetallic Compound

An ordered intermetallic phase based on TiAl used in turbine construction due to its low density and oxidation resistance.

Titanium-Aluminum intermetallics are hard, lightweight materials, but welding is tricky. The risk lies in cracks and embrittlement because the material is sensitive to impurities and incorrect heat input. You have to keep the surface extremely clean and control the heat well, otherwise the weld becomes brittle. After welding, the part should cool slowly and in a controlled manner to prevent stresses from building up.
