Titanium-Aluminum Ordered Phase
Formation of intermetallic Ti3Al superlattice phases within the microstructure, resulting in high high-temperature strength combined with reduced specific weight.
Titanium-Aluminum ordered phases are hard, brittle microstructural constituents that form when you put in too much heat or cool the part incorrectly. They tend to form in the heat-affected zone when the material stays hot too long. These things are the killer for the weld because they eat up all the ductility and the part cracks under load. You need to keep the heat input low and work quickly so these phases don't even get a chance to form. Once the structure is there, only controlled post-weld heat treatment helps to get rid of the brittleness.
