Titanium Beta Transus Temperature

Limiting temperature at which titanium alloys completely transform upon heating from the hexagonal alpha to the body-centered cubic beta lattice.

Titanium alloys have a so-called beta transus, i.e., a temperature above which the structure transforms from alpha to beta phase. If you go above it during welding, the grain becomes coarse and the material loses toughness – you don't want that. The beta transus varies depending on the alloy, so you need to know what you're welding. Keep heat input low and work quickly, then you stay in the safe range. Too much heat or slow cooling will immediately show in the structure.
