Titanium Beta Transus Temperature Control
Thermal processing in the region of the alpha-to-beta titanium phase transformation to establish a balanced ratio of elongation at break and toughness.
When welding titanium, you have to be careful not to exceed the beta transus temperature. If the material gets too hot and transforms to the beta region, you'll get a coarse grain and the part becomes brittle and crack-sensitive. So you have to keep the heat input low and watch the interpass temperature. Weld in several thin layers and let the material cool down in between, instead of working with a thick, hot weld pool. This way you stay below the critical temperature and the microstructure remains fine and tough.
