Titanium lattice distortion effect
The elastic strain of the hexagonal titanium crystal lattice caused by the dissolution of impurity atoms, resulting in an increased yield strength.
When welding titanium, foreign atoms can migrate into the crystal lattice and really strain it. This makes the material stronger and harder, but also more brittle and prone to cracking. Too many of these atoms in the lattice will completely upset the structure, and instead of a tough workpiece, you quickly have a problem part. When welding and heat treating, you have to work clean and keep the influencing factors in check so that distortion doesn't get out of hand.
