Titanium Grade 5 microstructure
A finely distributed, two-phase alpha-beta microstructure in the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V, adjusted through targeted thermo-mechanical treatment to achieve an optimal combination of tensile strength, ductility, and fracture toughness.
Titanium Grade 5, also Ti-6Al-4V, gets its good structure through a targeted heat treatment. You heat the material and then cool it in a controlled way so that a fine mixed structure of alpha and beta phases forms. This structure makes the material strong and tough at the same time, which is why it's widely used in aircraft construction. When welding, you have to be careful not to ruin this structure. If you put in too much heat or cool incorrectly, you'll get an unfavorable structure that breaks more easily. So keep the heat input low and let the part cool slowly and evenly, then the structure stays stable.
