Titanium carbide stabilization

The preferential formation of titanium carbide to bind carbon in austenitic steels. This prevents chromium depletion at grain boundaries and thus inhibits intergranular corrosion.

Titanium binds the free carbon in steel to form titanium carbide. This keeps the carbon bound and prevents it from settling at grain boundaries, which would otherwise lead to chromium depletion and intergranular corrosion. This is especially important in stainless steels to keep the weld seam resistant. You achieve this by using titanium-stabilized steels or adding titanium as an alloying addition. Make sure there is enough titanium in the material, then the binding happens on its own.
