Titanium carbonitride formation

Titanium carbonitrides form in the melt from carbon and nitrogen. They prevent uncontrolled grain growth and make the weld harder.

Physical-Chemical Working Mechanism

Titanium carbonitrides form from the reaction of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in the molten pool. These compounds are extremely hard and stable.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Titanium carbonitride formation improves weld strength and hardness, but it also prevents uncontrolled grain growth. Too much titanium carbonitride can raise hardness, which hurts formability and can cause cracking.

Shop Practice & Operating Instructions

To promote titanium carbonitrides, control the carbon content in the weld pool. With high carbon content (like in HSS or martensitic steels), titanium carbonitride formation can be increased. Don't cool too fast so you get a uniform grain structure.
