Titanium Grain Refinement in Weld Metal

Formation of fine titanium nitrides or oxides acting as nuclei for heterogeneous solidification, producing a fine-grained, tough microstructure in the weld bead.

Titanium is used as a microalloying element in the filler metal or base material to refine the grain in the weld metal and heat-affected zone. It forms fine, stable particles that act as nuclei for solidification, promoting a uniform, fine-grained structure. The result is a tougher weld with better crack resistance. But be careful not to add too much titanium. Then the structure gets too hard and brittle, and you'll have problems with cracks or lack of fusion. So the amount must be well controlled. In practice, this means: stick to the alloy specifications, watch for controlled cooling, and avoid extreme heating. If you keep the parameters clean, you'll get a nice, fine structure without nasty surprises.
