Titanium Grain Stabilization
Titanium reduces the nitrogen content in the weld pool, which leads to smaller austenite grains and increases heat resistance.
Physical-Chemical Operating Principle
Titanium reacts with nitrogen in the liquid weld pool, forming stable nitrides. This reduces the free nitrogen content, preventing the formation of large austenite grains.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Small austenite grains increase the toughness and heat resistance of the weld metal. Without titanium grain stabilization, large grains can form, leading to cracks and distortion.
Shop Practice & Action Guidelines
Use titanium in the weld pool when carbon content is rising (e.g., > 0.2 %) to control grain size. The titanium concentration should be between 0.1 and 0.5 %.
