Titanium Lamellar Martensite

Titanium lamellar martensite forms during rapid cooling in titanium alloys and has high hardness but low ductility.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Titanium lamellar martensite forms when titanium alloys are rapidly cooled above the critical quenching rate. The material remains in the beta phase and forms a fine lamellar structure.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Titanium lamellar martensite causes very high stress buildup and can lead to cracks and hot cracks. The hardness makes the material difficult to machine and increases the risk of fracture.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

To avoid titanium lamellar martensite, ensure controlled cooling. Use a slow cooling cycle and prevent rapid temperature drops. When welding titanium alloys, it's important to keep the maximum cooling rate below the critical quenching rate.
