Titanium Surface Nitriding

Thermochemical treatment for the diffusion of nitrogen into the titanium surface layer, creating hard titanium nitride coatings. This drastically improves wear and scuffing resistance.

Titanium nitriding is a surface hardening process: nitrogen diffuses into the titanium and forms a hard titanium nitride layer. This makes the surface wear-resistant and seizure-resistant, but it can embrittle the structure if you overdo it. When welding nitrided parts, you have to be careful: the hard layer must be completely removed in the weld area, otherwise you'll get porosity and cracks. Grind off the nitride layer generously before welding. If you want to nitride yourself, you need a clean, grease-free surface and must tightly control temperature and time. Too hot or too long, and the part becomes brittle; too mild, and it won't do anything.
