Titanium Surface Nitriding Layer

A diffusion-generated hard surface layer composed of titanium nitrides that increases the wear resistance and galling resistance of titanium components.

Surface nitriding of titanium is a diffusion process where nitrogen is introduced into the surface layer to form hard titanium nitrides. This makes the surface more wear-resistant and increases seizure resistance. If you have to weld such parts, remember: The nitrided layer is hard and brittle. Before welding, the layer must be completely removed in the weld area, otherwise you'll get porosity and cracks in the weld. After welding, you can re-nitride the area if needed.
