Titanium Plasma Nitriding

Surface hardening process for titanium in which nitrogen ions diffuse in within a plasma. This creates a hard surface layer to increase wear resistance.

When plasma nitriding titanium, the surface is enriched with nitrogen. The nitrogen diffuses into the material and forms a hard, wear-resistant surface layer that also improves corrosion resistance. If you plan to weld such parts, you must grind off the layer completely beforehand. The nitriding layer is hard and brittle; otherwise, it will crack during welding, and you'll get porosity and cracks in the transition. The plasma system settings must be precise, otherwise the layer becomes uneven and you'll get stresses in the component.
