Titanium Weld Metal Embrittlement
Titanium weld metal embrittlement is the loss of toughness due to diffusion of oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon. This requires complete shielding gas coverage.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Titanium weld metal embrittlement occurs through the diffusion of oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon into the titanium material. These foreign atoms change the crystal structure and reduce the toughness of titanium.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Embrittlement leads to reduced strength and increased susceptibility to cracking and fracture. This can cause safety issues in the shop and in the final product.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use complete gas shielding like argon or helium when welding titanium. Keep the shielding gas concentration constant and monitor the gas flow continuously. Avoid drafts or missing gas supply to prevent embrittlement.
