Titanium-Steel Weld Transition
Technically demanding metallurgical joint between titanium and steel which strictly requires the use of intermediate layers due to the formation of brittle intermetallic phases.
Welding titanium and steel directly is a problem: brittle intermetallic phases form, making the weld crack and barely able to take load. It only works with an intermediate layer, e.g., nickel or a nickel-base alloy. You have to apply it cleanly and then let the weld cool slowly and controlled, otherwise the structure cracks again. Keep heat input as low as possible to keep the mixing zone small.
