Titanium Superplastic Forming

Ability of fine-grained titanium alloys at elevated temperatures and low strain rates to undergo extreme plastic deformations without necking. This enables the production of complex sheet metal structures.

Superplastic forming of titanium is a special process for fine-grained alloys. The material behaves almost like a tough mass when you deform it slowly and at high temperature. When welding, you have to be careful not to destroy the microstructure. If you get too hot or deform too fast, you lose superplasticity and the part cracks. Keep temperature and speed within the specified window, then you get clean results.
