Titanium Superplastic Forming

Process for forming fine-grained titanium sheets at elevated temperatures utilizing extreme ductility. This allows complex geometries to be produced in a single operation.

You use titanium superplasticity when you deform the material slowly and evenly at very high temperature. In that state, the structure can be stretched extremely without tearing. But that only works if the temperature stays constant over the whole workpiece and you build up the pressure calmly and controlled. If you work too fast or with big temperature fluctuations, you immediately get cracks or uneven wall thicknesses. For welding, that means: Keep the heat input low and let the part cool down slowly after welding, otherwise the zone becomes brittle.
