Titanium-Tantalum Biocompatibility Matrix
Alloy optimization with tantalum to increase radiopacity and corrosion resistance of medical titanium implants in the physiological environment.
Titanium-tantalum is a special material for medical applications, mainly for implants. The tantalum makes the part more visible on X-ray and improves corrosion resistance in the body. When welding, you have to be careful: the material is sensitive to overheating, and you need a clean, oxygen-free environment. Best to weld with TIG under argon shielding gas and keep heat input as low as possible. If you get too hot or stay in the melt too long, the structure can be damaged and the part becomes prone to corrosion or cracking. After welding, inspect the weld for cracks and discoloration, which indicate poor shielding gas coverage.
