Titanium Alloy Grain Refinement
Targeted measure to reduce crystal grain size in titanium structures to increase mechanical strength and toughness. This is usually achieved through alloying additions such as carbon or boron.
Titanium alloys are sensitive when it comes to microstructure formation. Too much heat or incorrect cooling can coarsen the grain and kill the toughness. So weld with the lowest possible heat input and protect the weld and the heat-affected zone well with shielding gas until everything has cooled down. If you mess up the microstructure, just a wrong temperature control is enough – then you quickly get cracks or a brittle weld. Keep the weld clean and work quickly, then it'll be fine.
