ToFD Diffraction Pattern Evaluation

ToFD diffraction pattern evaluation is a method for precise localization of crack tips in weld samples by analyzing time-of-flight diffraction signals in the ultrasonic image.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

ToFD diffraction pattern analysis uses the time it takes for an ultrasonic pulse, reflected at a crack tip region, to reach the receiver. This time of flight varies depending on the position and size of the defect.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

This method provides precise topography of crack tips, which is crucial for quality assurance of weld specimens. Incorrect evaluations can lead to inaccurate defect localization and thus to disregard of safety standards.

Workshop Practice & Procedures

To successfully perform ToFD diffraction pattern analysis, follow these steps:

1. Calibration of the ultrasonic device: Ensure the device is correctly calibrated to measure accurate times of flight.

2. Acquisition of diffracted signals: Send ultrasonic pulses through the weld and capture the corresponding signals at the receiver.

3. Signal analysis: Use specialized software to analyze the times of flight and determine crack tip positions.

4. Documentation of results: Record all measurements and analyses in detail to ensure traceable documentation.
