TOFD Focal Zone Insonification
ToFD focal zone insonification concentrates sound energy on a specific depth range to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and inspect critical weld zones more precisely.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
ToFD focused zone insonification uses time-of-flight diffraction to concentrate sound energy in a fixed depth range in the material structure. This is achieved through specialized ultrasonic transducers and an optimized sound field design.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
This technique improves detection accuracy for flaws, cracks, or other defects in critical areas of the weld. However, insufficient focusing can lead to a degraded signal-to-noise ratio and cause smaller defects to go undetected.
Workshop Practice & Procedures
To successfully apply ToFD focused zone insonification:
1. Use special focusing transducers with optimized sound field design.
2. Ensure the transducer is correctly aligned and positioned to focus on the desired depth range.
3. Monitor signal quality and aim for a good signal-to-noise ratio.
4. Use a reference specimen to verify focusing and calibration.
