Torsion testing
Method for determining the shear strength and shear modulus of shafts and wires under torsional stress. It simulates real operating conditions of rotationally symmetric machine elements.
Torsion testing means you twist a specimen until it breaks or reaches a specified angle. You check whether the material tears cleanly or deforms unevenly, cracks, or even splinters. This tells you whether the shaft or wire is uniformly tempered and whether the heat-affected zone from welding causes problems. If the specimen breaks cleanly and evenly, the part is good. If it tears irregularly or twists excessively, something is wrong with the material or heat treatment.
