Transient Thermal NDT

Transient thermal NDT is an inspection technique that detects inhomogeneities in metals by measuring the temporal temperature distribution after a thermal disturbance.

Physico-Chemical Working Principle

The technique uses the fact that temperature in a material behaves differently when disturbed from outside. These differences are measured with special cameras or sensors.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

This method can detect inhomogeneities like porosity, cracks, or uneven stresses in the weld. Misinterpretation can lead to missed defects and become a safety hazard.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Apply the technique after making the weld, before it cools. Measurement should be done within 1 to 2 minutes after welding. Ensure proper calibration and interpretation of results.
