Droplet Corrosion
Droplet corrosion occurs from condensed water droplets on metal, leading to localized corrosion. Differential aeration within the droplet forms macroscopic galvanic cells.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Water drops onto a metal surface and forms a confined space. Within this space, varying humidity levels create differential aeration, which can trigger electrolyte formation and corrosion reactions.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks During Welding
Droplet corrosion can cause localized cracking and distortion in the workpiece, especially if the metal is under load. It can also shorten the service life of components and contribute to degradation of mechanical properties.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
Prevent droplet formation on metals by good insulation or heating. When welding, control the environment to ensure no water droplets form. If necessary, use special corrosion-inhibiting materials or coatings.
