U-groove butt joint
U-groove preparation is a channel-shaped joint preparation for thick plates that requires less filler material and thermal load than a V-groove.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The U-groove shape has a channel-like form, which reduces the opening angle. This reduces the fill volume and the required filler metal amount. The lower thermal load leads to more efficient cooling of the weld.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
The U-groove reduces the likelihood of hot cracking and burn-through, as it requires less filler material. However, improper application can lead to incomplete filling or too narrow channels, which can cause stress concentrations and potential cracks in the material.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use the U-groove for thick plates (e.g., over 10 mm). Ensure the channels are sufficiently deep (approx. 2-3 mm) and uniformly filled. Use appropriate welding process and parameters to ensure clean filling. Monitor weld cooling to minimize thermal stresses.
