U-groove geometry
U-groove is a joint preparation with a rounded bottom, suitable for thick plates. It reduces the opening angle and filler metal.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
The U-groove has a rounded root, which distributes stresses more evenly during welding. This prevents local overheating and improves the mechanical joint.
Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding
A wrong U-groove geometry can lead to stress buildup, resulting in cracks or splits in the weld. Too small a groove angle can increase the filler material requirement and impair strength.
Workshop practice & instructions
For thick plates (over 10 mm), a U-groove with a groove angle of 60-70 degrees is recommended. Make sure the root is rounded and the joint is sufficiently beveled. Use a proper welding hose and ensure even heating.
